We are looking for a PRODUCTION AND MAINTENANCE STAFF
Qatargas Operating Company has exciting opportunities available for
qualified professionals to join our company in the development of the
vast North Field in Qatar. Qatargas currently has under development
over $20 billion worth of major projects, including the construction
of our new Liquefied Natural Gas trains for the production and export
of LNG to every corner of the globe.

♦ OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT
• UTILITIES

SHIFT SUPERVISORS
Graduate/ Diploma holder with a minimum 10 years experience in
utilities plant process with at least 4 years in a supervisory role.
Reports directly to the Head of Process. Understands company health,
safety and environmental policy & how its related to his job also able
for comprehensive report writing.
PANEL OPERATOR

Graduate/ Diploma with min 6 years experience in Utilities as panel
will familiar with high pressure steam. Power generation (STS, GTS),
waste water treatment, flare system N2 and Air system.

SENIOR OPERATOR
Diploma/ NCTVT with a formal plant training and able to lead his team
on routine day to day process activities in Utilities plant familiar
with high pressure steam. Power generation (STS, GTS), waste water
treatment, flare system N2 and Air system. Minimum 10 years Experience
and out of which at least 4 years as Senior Operator.

ROVER OPERATOR
Diploma/ NCTVT with a formal plant training with minimum 5 years
experience in utilities plant familiar with high pressure steam. Power
generation (STS, GTS), waste water treatment, flare system N2 and Air
system in the same position. Thorough knowledge of Process is must.
• INLET RECEIVING

SHIFT SUPERVISORS
Graduate/ Diploma holder with a minimum 10 years experience in inlet
receiving plant process with at least 4 years in a supervisory role.
Reports directly to the Head of Process. Understands company health,
safety and environmental policy & how its related to his job also able
for comprehensive report writing.

PANEL OPERATOR
Graduate/ Diploma with min 6 years experience in receiving panel will
familiar with slug catcher, Condensate stabilizer, piping operation,
LPG treating and sour water injection

SENIOR OPERATOR
Diploma/ NCTVT with a formal plant training and able to lead his team
on routine day to day process activities in receiving plant will
familiar with slug catcher, Condensate stabilizer, piping operation,
LPG treating and sour water injection. Minimum 10 years Experience and
out of which at least 4 years as Senior Operator.
• PROCESS

SHIFT SUPERVISORS
Graduate/ Diploma holder with a minimum 8 years experience in Oil,
Gas, and LNG plant process with at least 4 years in a supervisory
role. Reports directly to the Head of Process. Understands company
health, safety and environmental policy & how its related to his job
also able for comprehensive report writing.

PANEL OPERATOR
Graduate/ Diploma with min 6 years experience in LNG/ LPG Refinery or
Gas Treating plant with through knowledge of process.

SENIOR OPERATORS
Diploma/ NCTVT with a formal plant training and able to lead his team
on routine day to day process activities in LNG/ LPG Refinery or Gas
Treating plant. Minimum 10 years Experience and out of which at lease
4 years as Senior Operator.

ROVER OPERATORS
Diploma/ NCTVT with a formal plant training with minimum 5 years
experience in LNG Plant, LPG Refinery or Gas Treating plant in the
same position. Thorough knowledge of Process is must.

• SULFUR RECOVERY UNITS

SHIFT SUPERVISORS
Must have a minimum of 8 years experience within sulfur recovery
plants. Familiar with CLAUS, superclaus and TGT processes. This
position is a senior supervisory level and you will be responsible for
a team of operators reporting directly to Head of operation.

PANEL OPERATORS
Must have 5 years minimum experience in operating panel for Sulfur
recovery units in LNG, LPG, Refinery or Gas treating plants Familiar
with CLAUS, superclaus and TGT processes.

SENIOR OPERATORS
Must have 5 years minimum experience in operating Sulfur recovery
units in LNG, LPG, Refinery or Gas treating plants. Familiar with
CLAUS, superclaus and TGT processes

ROVER OPERATORS
Must have 5 years minimum experience in operating of Sulfur recovery
units in LNG, LPG, Refinery or Gas treating plants. Familiar with
CLAUS, superclaus and TGT processes.
• CSP

SENIOR OPERATOR/ ROVER OPERATOR
Must have minimum 5 years of liquid and solid sulfur handling,
granulation and ship loading experience, able to handle utility
packages like electric boilers, boiler feed water and instrument air.
• CLP

SHIFT SUPERVISOR
Must have min. 10 years of LNG storage and ship loading experience,
able to lead a team of 5, reporting to head of section.

PANEL OPERATOR
Must have min. 8 years of LNG storage and ship loading experience,
report writing, and reporting to shift supervisor.

SENIOR OPERATOR/ ROVER OPERATOR
Must have min. 5 years of LNG storage and ship loading experience,
familiar with loading arms connection.

• LIQUID BERTH

SHIFT SUPERVISOR
Must have 10 years of HC storage and ship loading experience,
knowledge of floating and conical roof tanks behavior while filling
emptying, ship loading safety and documentation procedures, reporting
to section head.

PANEL OPERATOR
Must have min. 8 years of HC storage and ship loading experience,
floating and conical roof tanks behavior while filling and emptying,
loading arms connecting/ disconnecting, ship loading safety awareness,
reporting to loading supervisor.

SENIOR OPERATOR/ ROVER OPERATOR
Must have 5 years of HC storage and ship loading experience with
floating and conical roof tanks, able to connect/ disconnect ship
loading arms, reporting to panel operator.
• REFINERY

SHIFT SUPERVISOR
Candidate should have minimum 9 years refinery expertise, experience
in fractionation, Hydrogen, Naphtha stabilization, Naphtha
Hydro-treating and Kerosene hydro-treating units, and minimum 2 years
in charge as shift supervisor.
PANEL OPERATOR
Candidate should have minimum 7 years refinery expertise, experience
in fractionation and hydro-treating units, and minimum 2 years in
charge as panel operator.
SENIOR OPERATOR
Candidate should have minimum 5 years expertise, and minimum two years
in charge as Senior Operator.
ROVER OPERATOR
Candidate should have minimum 3 years expertise in any of the refinery
process units, such as fractionation unit, any of hydro-treating
units, hydrogen unit or naphtha stabilization and LPG units.

• TANK FARM

PANEL OPERATOR
Able to understand the operating philosophy, principles and process
parameters and control complex control systems. He should know the
cost & effect of PESD, ESD and F&G systems. Able to lead the shift
crew with clear instruction and follow-up outside operators action
from DCS. Experience with floating roof tanks, conical roof tanks
operations and tanks/ product behaviors with climatic changes. Able to
record handling and report writing.

SENIOR OPERATOR
Able to co-ordinate with panel operator for the day to day operating
activities. Identify potential rotating equipment failure before
occurrence (bearing noise, vibration, rubbing noise, cavitations).
Experience with floating roof tanks, conical roof tanks operations and
tanks/ product behaviors with climatic changes. Able to produce
handover report, and records handling.

ROVER OPERATOR
Follows-up instruction from senior or panel operators. Able to
understand the safe operating principles of rotating and process
equipment. Able to operate with minimum supervision in terms of
equipment line up for the intended operations. Experience with
floating roof tanks, conical roof tanks operations and tanks/ product
behaviors with climatic changes. Able to read P&ID/ PFD's

• OFFSHORE OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT (ONSHORE BASED POSITIONS)

MAINTENANCE ENGINEER-ELECTRICAL & INSTRUMENT (Offshore)
Provides support for the Mechanical, Electrical & Instrument
maintenance of field equipment. Contributes to the overall planning &
execution of major shutdowns. Provide technical advice to Mechanical,
Electrical & Instrument Supervisors in consultation with the On-shore
Electrical and Instrument Engineers on a regular basis and leads/
participate in troubleshooting complex and recurring equipment faults.
Initiates service requests for all contract services and
administration of the contracts. Act as an onshore focal point for all
matters related to Mechanical/ Electrical/ Instrumentation repair,
modifications, material, Co-ordinate actions with Engineering, SE&Q,
Supply, Inspection, other maintenance disciplines and outside
agencies. Bachelors degree in Mechanical, Electrical or
Instrumentation Engineering together with 8 years maintenance
experience in the oil and gas or similar industry and offshore
maintenance is desirable. Good written and spoken English.

MAINTENANCE PLANNER (Offshore)
Coordinates and participates in maintenance work planning for all
regular and scheduled preventive maintenance, defect repair and
modification activities of offshore facilities. Programs the
Preventive Maintenance Plan for offshore facilities in all respective
sections of mechanical, electrical or instrumentation. Processes daily
work orders issued for various maintenance sections. Updates equipment
histories with details of work carried out, equipment condition,
component replacement as advised or noted after completion of the
work. Maintain repairs and faults failures records. Completion of
Secondary (12 years) education, followed by finalized training in an
engineering discipline equivalent to 2 years full time. 8 years
maintenance experience in an oil or gas process plant, including site
activities and planning experience. Good written and spoken English.
Computer literacy, including use of maintenance planning, and
management systems.

PANEL OPERATOR (Offshore)
Position incumbent will have frontline responsibility for monitoring
and controlling operations of remote offshore wellheads through the
Distributed Control System located in the control room. He'll work on
a shift basis at the onshore plant control room and will be required
to have deep technical knowledge of the equipment, an analytical
approach and the ability to identify and act on real and potential
problems. Incumbent will participate during the phases of
commissioning, start-up and operations of these remote wellheads and
thus would be expected to travel to construction sites and offshore
fields. High School graduate and successful completion of the National
Certificate (NC). A minimum of 8 years operator experience in the oil
and gas sector, preferably offshore, exclusive of any study time taken
to upgrade qualifications.

♦ MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT

MECHANICAL ENGINEER
Plans and supervises the maintenance, repair and installation of a
wide range of rotating and static equipment in the Utilities, Inlet
Receiving Facilities, Storage and Loading areas. Provides supervision
and technical direction over preventive, predictive and breakdown
maintenance requirements. Participates in the preparation of
modifications/ projects and shutdown requirements. BSc. in Mechanical
Engineering or equivalent. 8 years maintenance experience in an oil or
gas processing plant including at least 5 years supervisory
experience. Good written and spoken English.

SENIOR ANALYZER TECHNICIAN
Completion of secondary education (12 years) followed by 3 years
formal trade training on instrument/ analyzer/ control system
engineering crafts plus a minimum of 5 years direct instrument and
trouble shooting experiences on analyzers in the oil and gas sector or
chemical process industries.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEER
Plans and supervises the maintenance, repair, installation, overhaul,
testing and calibration of a wide range of electrical equipment, power
distribution systems and other equipment in the offsites areas.
Provides supervision and technical direction over preventative,
predictive and breakdown maintenance requirements. Participates in the
preparation of modifications/projects and shutdown requirements. BSc.
in Electrical Engineering or equivalent together with 8 years
maintenance experience in an oil or gas processing plant including at
least 5 years supervisory experience. Good written and spoken English.

SENIOR INSTRUMENT TECHNICIAN
Completion of secondary education (12 years) followed by 3 years
formal Trade Training in Instrument or Control Systems Engineering
Crafts plus a minimum of 5 years direct Instrument and Trouble
shooting maintenance experience in the Oil and Gas sector or Chemical
Process Industries.

CONTROL SYSTEMS ENGINEER
Supervises, plans, provides technical support and is responsible for
the safe operation and functionality of Integrated Control Systems
(ICS) deployed at the Qatargas Onshore and Offshore facilities.
Actively participates in the Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site
Acceptance Test (SAT) of new control systems, to ensure that the new
technology is transferred and accepted into Qatargas. Bachelors degree
in Instrumentation or Control Systems, Computer Sciences or Software
Engineering together with 6 years experience in instrumentation
design, maintenance or ideally within an oil or gas processing
environment, together with knowledge and/or experience in Foxboro IA
system, PLC, TMR and ESD systems. Good written and spoken English.

INSTRUMENT ENGINEER
Supervises, plans and coordinates activities for the maintenance, safe
operation and functionality of all Instruments, regulatory control,
process safety and emergency shutdown systems associated with process
operations in all Plant areas. Provides supervision and technical
direction over predictive and breakdown maintenance. BSc. in
Instrument or Control System Engineering or equivalent together with 8
years maintenance experience in a modern oil or gas processing plant
which uses DCS/TMR/PLC technology, including at least 5 years
supervisory experience. Very good written and spoken English.

SENIOR ELECTRICAL TECHNICIAN
Completion of secondary education (12 years) followed by 3 years
formal Trade Training in Electrical Engineering craft plus a minimum
of 5 years of direct Electrical Maintenance and trouble shooting
experience in the Oil and Gas sector or Chemical Process industries.
Knowledge of PLCs power generation and control equipment.

6. MECHANICAL ENGINEER - Piping & Stationery Equipment
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5 years of
professional level experience in the engineering/ design department in
oil/petrochemical Industry. Experience of mechanical maintenance is
essential.
Knowledge of engineering codes, practices and techniques of mechanical
engineering, supervision, project & contract management, Materials and

7. ELECTRICAL ENGINEER
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with 5 years of

Knowledge and experience in the operation of SAP-PM module. Specific knowledge of scheduling in SAP is desirable. Should have strong working knowledge of manpower scheduling, work estimation, engineering codes and practices, materials specifications and ordering procedures

Estimator/Quantity Surveyor (PDD)
HND in Business Administration or Degree in an Engineering discipline. Membership in a recognized Cost Engineering institute. 5 years experience preferably in the petrochemical industry including Cost Control, Accountancy, Contract Administration and Estimating. Begerak adalah awal kesuksesan bisnis

ZAMAN semakin maju, dan waktu terasa cepat. flu barangkali, yang kita rasakan saat ini. Maka, agar kita tidak ketinggalan zaman, sebaiknya entrepreneur harus lebih mampu bergerak cepat. Lebih proaktif, dan berani mengambil risiko. Dengan dernikian, kita akan lebih mudah mengantisipasi kemungkinan munculnya berbagai kendala bisnis yang mungkin terjadi. Bukan, bersikap seperti dulu, yang hanya reaktif dan menghindari risiko.
Saya jadi teringat dengan Rupert Murdoch, yang melangkah cepat dalam bisnisnya. Pada saat boss perusahaan lainnya masih terlelap tidur, ia selalu menjadi penelpon pertama untuk inelakukan negosiasi bisnis. Dalam konteks ini, saya sependapat dengan Matthew I Kiernan, penulis “The Commandments of the 21st Century Management” yang mengatakan, bahwa dalam bisnis telah terjadi pergeseran paradigma. Jika, di abad ke-20, bisnis kita lebih terkesan stabil dan bisa diprediksi, namun di abad ke-21 atau di era millenium ketiga ini, perubahannya cenderung terputus-putus. Begitu pula, bisnis kita yang dulu Iebih didasarkan ukuran dan skala, tapi kini lebih pada kecepatan dan responsif Kepemimpinan, kalau dulu banyak dilakukan dari atas, kini dilakukan semua orang. Maka tak mengherankan bila dalam menjalankan bisnis di era milenium ketiga ini, memang dituntut untuk lebih luwes, tidak kaku. Sebab, perjalanan bisnis lebih dikendalikan oleh visi dan nilai-nilai, dibandingkan sebelutnnya yang semata-mata hanya dikendalikan peraturan dan hirarki. Selain itu, kalau kita dulu di dalam menjalankan bisnis selalu membutuhkan kepastian. tapi kini hams lebih toleran terhadap amtiguitas atau memiliki sikap mendua. Soal informasi bisnis demikian juga, yang sebelumnya hanya untuk pucuk pimpinan, tapi kini disebarkan ke semua orang. Sehingga, saat ini bisnis tak lagi mengandalkan pada analisis kuantitatif, namun lebih pada kreativitas dan intuisi. Tanpa itu, saya kira bisnis yang kita jalankan sekarang ini akan banyak tersendat atau sulk untulc maju. Bahkan, kalau dulunya kita berkeyakinan, bahwa masing-Inasing perusahaan bisa mandiri, tapi sekarang terasa sulit. Karena pada dasarnya, perusahaan-perusahaan akan saling tergantung satu dengan lainnya.
Pergeseran paradigma bisnis di era milenium ini, juga akan rnengajak kita, kalau dulu hanya berfokus pada organisasi internal, tapi kini kita harus lebih berfokus pada lingkungan yang kompetitif. juga dan integrasi vertikal ke integrasi maya. Seperti Amazon. com, toko buku virtual pertama dan terakbar di dunia maya. Bahkan. kalau dulu, kita hanya bersaing untuk pasar masa kini, tapi sekarang kita justru lebih tertantang untuk menciptakan pasan masa depan. Karena itu kita jangan lagi hanya mengandalkan pada keunggulan kompetitif yang berkesinambungan, tapi justru harus terus-menerus mencari keunggulan.
Saya yakin, dengan kepekaan kita terhadap kondisi tersebut, ,maka kita akan lebih siap menghadapi kondisi yang berubah-ubah, lebih terbuka menerima ide-ide baru. Bahkan, kita akan lebih piawai dalam mengambil kesempatan bisnis, lebih berani mengambil risiko. dan tentu saja akan lebih siap meraih keberhasilan. Anda berani mencoba?

Benar, pembaca, kalau itu terjadi, tiba saatnya untuk menjadi boss bagi diri Anda sendiri. Tapi, apakah Anda sudah siap meninggalkan pekerjaan yang bagus dan nyaman dengan gaji bulanan, kantor modern, sekretaris yang efisien, dan perasaan aman yang datang pada saat anda bekerja untuk sebuah organisasi yang mapan?
Seorang teman yang telah bertahun-tahun bekerja pada perusahaan penerbangan nasional terbesar, dengan ribuan staf, gaji jutaan, fasilitas lengkap, tiba-tiba saja memutuskan keluar dan berwirausaha. Kata-kata yang pertama diterimanya adalah,
”Apakah kamu gila?”, ….”Kamu menghancurkan sebuah karir yang menjanjikan”…..dan caci maki lainnya. Belum lagi perasaan anak-istri, orangtua dan saudara lainnya yang tidak bisa berucap...
Diperlukan keberanian besar untuk menulis surat pengunduran diri. Masih yakinkah Anda mempunyai segala sesuatu yang akan mengantarkan Anda menjadi seorang wiraswastawan sukses? Lalu apa yang akan Anda kerjakan? Peraturan pertama kewirausahaan, latihlah diri Anda untuk melihat kekosongan atau celah di pasar, lalu mengisinya.
Lihatlah sekeliling Anda. Lihatlah orang di jalanan, mereka yang duduk di belakang mesin jahit, pelayanan apa yang akan dia berikan? Lihatlah wanita perempuan penjual sate ayam di dekat penginapan murah itu, mengapa ia pilih lokasi itu? Bagaimana dengan hotel baru di jalan utama itu, mengapa bisa begitu sukses? Bagaimana dengan orang yang bekerja di bagian komputer itu bisa sangat sukses dalam bisnis program perangkat lunaknya sendiri?
Ada satu jawaban singkat untuk semua pertanyaan ini: bisnis ini eksis karena ada yang membutuhkan mereka. Tidak peduli apakah Anda berusaha dengan paha ayam, rumah makan bagus atau website. Atau, apakah anda berbicara tentang putaran harian Rp100.000 atau Rp.100.000.000. Dari mulai Tanah Abang – Jakarta Pusat, Glodok – Jakarta Pusat, bahkan daerah Sawangan, Depok Privinsi jawa Barat, prinsipnya sama:
 Keberhasilan dalam bisnis
 Bekerja dengan prinsip
 Menemukan sebuah kekosongan
 Dan mengisinya!

Ketika dunia laki-laki digemparkan dengan ditemukannya pil biru Viagra yang sebenarnya adalah obat pemacu jantung, tapi kemudian jadi pemacu organ kejantanan pria, beberapa tahun lalu serentak seluruh dunia mempublikasikannya (ingat, Viagra tidak pernah beriklan di media manapun). Hasilnya, Viagra menjadi product of the year dan menghasilkan miliaran dollar bagi penemunya.
Kasus Viagra di dunia, rupanya memberikan inspirasi bagi Simon Jonathan. Setelah sebelumnya sukses melahirkan Extra Joss, yang menghasilkan ratusan miliar, kemudian muncullah Irex yang kurang lebih sama fungsinya dengan Viagra. Dengan tag line ”Kado Ulang Tahun Mama”, dan dikemas dengan iklan yang diperankan oleh laki-laki kurus kering dan loyo, tiba-tiba menjadi perkasa setelah meminum Irex, hasilnya, produk ini meledak di pasaran. Ya, mereka jeli melihat peluang, kekosongan dan mengisinya.
Lalu mengapa bukan Anda yang melakukan ini? Jika Anda yang pertama menawarkan kepada publik sesuatu yang dibutuhkan publik dan tidak didapatkan dari orang lain, atau jika Anda berhasil mengantisipasi sebuah kebutuhan di masa depan, Anda memiliki sebuah kesempatan bagus untuk menjadi kaya. Sampai saat adanya kompetisi, Anda akan memiliki semua pasar itu sendirian.
Sejarah memberikan banyak contoh wiraswastawan yang menjadi sukses dengan memenuhi atau mengantisipasi kebutuhan akan produk baru. Isaac Merit Singer memproduksi mesin jahit yang cocok untuk bekerja di ruang terbatas, bahkan di dalam kamar sekalipun. Henry Ford memakai metode jalur perakitan untuk memproduksi mobil yang bisa dibeli orang biasa. George Eastman melihat kebutuhan akan kamera kecil yang bisa dibawa-bawa. Ray Krock dari Mc Donald melihat potensi usaha waralaba makanan cepat saji.
Darimana datangnya gagasan-gagasan seperti itu? Ada tiga macam sumber gagasan.
Pertama, pekerjaan Anda. Pekerjaan yang sudah Anda kerjakan bisa menjadi sebuah potensi sumber gagasan, Karena disitulah naluri bisnis Anda sudah dikembangkan.
Kedua, hobi atau minat Anda di luar pekerjaan, karena itu adalah sebuah wilayah lain dimana Anda memiliki suatu perasaan alamiah.
Sumber ketiga, adalah apa yang sering disebut orang sebagai ”observasi pejalan kaki”, atau mengenali sebuah peluang melalui suatu perjumpaan biasa, atau suatu insiden dalam kehidupan sehari-hari Anda.
Kalau Anda yang pertama, maka Anda tidak harus brilian. Nanti Anda akan memiliki waktu untuk mengembangkan dan memperbaiki segala sesuatu yang pemah Anda lakukan. Tapi ketika yang lain mulai berkompetisi dengan Anda, maka Anda harus menjadi yang terbaik.


Bekerja Keras

Nasib seorang wiraswastawan tidak mudah. Anda harus bekerja keras. Namun, karena Anda bekerja disebagian besar waktu Anda, pasti ada harga yang harus dibayar. Korban pertama adalah kehidupan sosial Anda. Waktu untuk berkencan, untuk keluarga, bahkan untuk bersenang-sengang tidak akan anda miliki pada masa-masa awal menjalankan bisnis anda.. Bisa-bisa ini menjadi sebuah kehidupan yang sunyi.
Dalam keadaan seperti ini Anda sangat beruntung apabila memiliki kekasih atau seorang istri yang setia menemani dalam suka maupun duka. Karena menjadi seorang wirausahawan juga adalah masalah daya tahan. Seperti mendung di musim hujan. Setelah hujan pun turun, langit akan menjadi cerah kembali.
Ada kompensasi. Semakin keras Anda bekerja, maka Anda akan semakin beruntung. Kami punya rekan, namanya Apiko Joko Mulyono. Dia, ”cuma” reporter di tabloid keluarga muslim, Fikri namanya. Sebagai employee — kalau mengikuti teori kuadran Robert T. Kiyosaki – berkat dorongan kami, dan ”keahlian interpersonalnya”, berkomunikasi, ia kami desak menjadi jurnalis ”semi-bisnis” dalam arti, memfungsikan ketrampilan jurnalistik dan lobbynya untuk menulis soft advertorial. Meski awalnya agak ogah-ogahan, ia memula peran-peran semacam copywriter, penulis artikel soft advertorial di tabloidnya (maksudnya: rubrik bernuansa promotif, dengan dua macam kompensasi: penjualan langsung dalam jumlah minimal tertentu, atau semi-iklan). Bung Apiko, meskipun masih sayang profesi jurnalistiknya, mulai menjalankan tugas barunya.
Hasilnya? Luar biasa untuk reporter yang sepanjang empat tahunan bekerja, murni sebagai jurnalis. Apiko berhasil mencapai targetnya. Ia memang bekerja keras, dan agak mengorbankan waktunya untuk keluarga. Bukan itu saja. Ia ”tebal muka” dicibiri sebagai ”jurnalis matre” (materialis, Pen.), karena artikelnya kian selektif pada isu-isu yang ”bergizi” alias bisa menghasilkan ”penjualan langsung” ataupun ”semi advertorial”. Akibat lanjutnya, bisa ditebak. Dari ”main-main” jadi serius. Bossnya, pemimpin perusahaan tabloid Fikri, malah menargetkan jumlah tertentu perminggunya harus ia capai. target itu, tercapai, bahkan beberapa kali terlampaui. Apa yang ia kerjakan, semua orang di perusahaannya tahu. Meski pun berisiko dilecehkan, Apiko tahan banting. The show must go on. Apa yang dikerjakannya, menginspirasi unit bisnis lainnya di bawah payung holding yang sama.
”Syukur, istri saya sangat pengertian. Untuk kerja keras itu, saya bisa menabung dengan nilai yang lumayan dibanding rekan selevel saya. Saya bisa membeli sepeda motor secara tunai, dalam tahun kedua saya bekerja. Itu sesuatu yang tidak saya bayangkan sama sekali, bahwa saya mampu membelinya.” Itulah Apiko, yang karena masih sayang pada profesi jurnalistiknya, mengaku baru menggunakan belum separuh dari potensi enterprenership yang ada dalam dirinya.

Ketekunan

Jaques Cousteau, penyelidik, penemu dan ahli lingkungan dalam sebuah wawancara dengan Eugene Grisham penulis buku Achievement Factors dalam sebuah wawancara di atas sebuah jet carteran menuju Atlanta, mengungkapkan pendapat menarik. Kami kutip untuk Anda.
”Bagaimana Anda bisa mengerjakan semua itu?” Cousteau terdiam beberapa saat, lalu menjawab.
”Saya keras kepala – kalau saya punya suatu maksud di kepala saya…saya membuat daftar hal-hal untuk main-main: Amazon, Haiti, kapal Angina. Saya mencoba, dan saya tidak punya uangnya. Saya mencoba lagi, dan saya tidak dapat uangnya, dan setelah sepuluh tahun saya mendapatkannya.”
Dengan bijaksana, dengan penuh tekat dan ketekunan, selalu mengejar apa yang ia inginkan, kadang cepat, kadang-kadang pelan, ia telah mengalami kemenangan-kemenangan. Pada tahun 1943, tabung oxygen (Aqualung) yang ia kembangkan dengan Emile Gagnan, memberi kesempatan petualangan di bawah air, membuka dunia di bawah air untuk berjuta-juta penyelam scuba. Lalu ia kembangkan keterampilan sebagai seorang ahli fotografi di bawah air, dan pada tahun 1956, ia menangkan Oscar untuk The Silent World. Sembilan tahun kemudian ia sekali lagi memenangkan oscar untuk World Without Sun. Saat ini usianya 80-an. Dan kakek Cousteau masih bekerja, masih memeriksa hal-hal yang ia catat dalam daftarnya, menyusun daftar, lalu mengeksekusi satu persatu daftar targetnya.


Fokus

Logika ”focusing”, meminjam fenomena matahari. Mahakarya Tuhan ini, sumber energi yang amat kuat, yang setiap jamnya menyinari bumi dengan jutaan kilowatt energi. Siapa pun, bisa ”mandi matahari” berjam-jam dengan risiko yang ringan.
Bagaimana dengan laser? Seberkas sinarnya, adalah energi lemah. Ia hanya membutuhkan beberapa kilowatt energi tetapi bisa difokuskan menjadi sebuah pancaran cahaya yang koheren. Dari seberkas cahaya laser, temuan ilmuwan bisa menggunakannya untuk dari memotong baja sampai mematikan sel kanker.
Beralih pada perbincangan sebuah usaha. Anda bisa menciptakan efek yang sama: sebuah kemampuan kuat laksana laser untuk mendominasi sebuah pasar. Itulah yang kami maksud sebagai ”tindakan memfokuskan”.
Ketika sebuah usaha menjadi tidak fokus, ia akan kehilangan kekuatannya. Usaha itu menjadi seperti matahari, menyebarkan energinya terlalu banyak produk, di pasar yang terlalu luas.
Konsentrasi, kemampuan untuk memberikan perhatian penuh kepada tugas yang dihadapi, dan dalam jangka panjang, berkonsentrasi pada suatu karier, merupakan satu segi dari fokus. Tetapi bukan hanya itu. Segi lainnya, intensitas. Intensitas melibatkan kemampuan untuk menyalurkan sejumlah besar tenaga pada tugas yang dihadapi. Menjalankannya sebagai kebiasaan, akan meningkatkan karier Anda. Secara analog, fokus mempunyai pengaruh yang sama terhadap pekerjaan seseorang, bak lensa pembesar yang dipegang di atas sehelai kertas pada hari yang cerah. Memegang lensa dengan sudut yang tepat, membuat sinar-sinar berkonsentrasi pada satu titik, sanggup membakar kertas itu.
Prioritas, masuk dalam gagasan fokus. Jangan segan-segan mengubah dan menaruh yang paling penting sebagai nomor satu jika sesuatu yang tak terduga muncul. Bekerjalah atas dasar prioritas.

Tentukanlah apa prioritas puncak dalam pekerjaan dengan berpikir secara cermat untuk apa perusahaan mempekerjakan Anda. Banyak orang membuat kesalahan dengan bekerja keras untuk tiap tugas yang mereka hadapi, tanpa atau dengan sedikit sekali memperhitungkan pentingnya tugas-tugas itu. Pada akhir hari, mereka akan sangat kelelahan, sambil memuji diri sendiri karena semua pekerjaan sudah diselesaikan. Sayangnya, ada saja yang tanpa sadar sudah membelakangkan pekerjaan penting (important) dan mendesak (urgent). Penting saja, mungkin bisa saja bukan di uturan teratas, tapi urgent, sesuatu yang terkait dengan deadline, yang tak bisa tidak, ia didahulukan atau sesuatu yang buruk menghadangnya.

Letakkanlah surat-surat, memo-memo dan peringatan-peringatan tentang semua tugas lainnya yang menunggu dalam map-map dengan tanda prioritas A, B, dan C.

Membahas soal fokus, bisa kita mengutip pendapat Eugene Grisham dalam Achievement Factor, buku best seller dunia itu. Ia bercerita tentang faktor-faktor sukses hasil wawancara bertahun-tahun dengan tokoh-tokoh sukses dunia. Kesimpulan buku itu cuma satu: “Untuk sukses besar dalam suatu bidang, apapun bidangnya, dibutuhkan waktu setidaknya sepuluh tahun dengan tetap berfokus pada bidang tersebut.”
Kami yakin benar dengan kesimpulan buku itu. Kami punya bukti, seorang yang cukup kami kenal, sejak lulus SMA, hidup dari berdagang dan tak pemah berpindah-pindah bidang usaha kecuali pada produk rumah tangga yang sangat digemari kaum ibu. Kenyataannya, tak sampai sepuluh tahun, ia sukses di bidang yang digelutinya. Itulah kekuatan fokus.
Bak air yang menetesi sebuah batu, setetes demi setetes; hari berganti hari, tahun berganti tahun, pada saatnya, kita akan terkaget-kaget melihat kenyataan bahwa batu tersebut telah menjadi cekung hanya karena tetesan air.
